Boat: 2002 Maxum 1900SR
Engine:5.0L Mercruizer 0M353341)
Drive: Alpha One Gen II (0L949752)

Took the boat in to have the shift cable bellows replaced.....since they had to remove the drive I asked to replace the u-drive bellows as well as the exhaust bellows. $1080 later, this is what I got....

1. Found pieces of exhaust flapper in the exhaust bellows and had to replace the flappers.
2. Chipped a chunk aluminum off the fin at the bottom of the out-drive.
2. Destroyed the worm screw on the exhaust clamp resulting in it coming off first time I took the boat out.
3. Trim/tilt switch that no longer works as a two-position switch.
4. Difficult to shift the drive into neutral.
5. A "whine" in the drive at around 20mph that I've never heard.
6. Trim meter shows drive not all the way down and too far up?

Oh, does anyone have any idea what they could have done to cause this? Almost looks like they had no idea how to remove the drive?

Lastly...any reason there would be a whine coming from the stern drive around 20mph???

I took the boat in to another shop today to reset the trim sensors, replace the drive lube and and readjust the shift cable....costing a pretty penny so far.

Re: Bellows replaced now "whine" in drive???

so items #1-6 is what the shop did for you??

broken skeg/not seeing flappers in the exhaust/not setting trim senders among other things??

if so, sounds like these guys don't know what is up

i would be concerned about the whine in the drive if it started after it came back from the shop, as far as what it could be tough to say, the work they performed would not entail doing anything to the drive aside from removing it, inspecting the u joints/driveshaft and re installing it

See if they will pay for it, or take them to small claims court.

Bad workmanship.

Got me, im going with bad workmanship again.

5. A "whine" in the drive at around 20mph that I've never heard.

Gimble bearing? Bad engine alignment

Keep the reciept, you will need it in court.

If you turn hard does the whine get worse?
If so it sounds like a gimbal bearing and if the noise sounds like a fast clicking sound then might be u-joints.
WOW you got hosed.
I'd be fired if i let a boat leave like that.

Since they clearly are such bodgers, is it possible that they forgot to fill the drive up with oil?

look at the scuffing on the bracket that holds the lower gimbal ring pivot.
you got other issues.

Agree with that! Is it where the hose clamp on the bellows was hitting it?
It sure looks like the clamp was junk and bent up.Resulting in a leaking bellows that may have damaged the u-joints or bearing.
Or that was the clamp on the exhaust bellow?

Re: Bellows replaced now "whine" in drive???

Took the boat to Hipp Marine, they pulled the drive again, checked alignment (it was good) and re-attached the drive. Re-adjusted the trim/tilt senders and replaced the drive lube. Boat is finally back to how it was before all this started....thank god!

PS. Regarding the scuffing on the gimbal ring assembly, they had no idea how that was done either. Suggested it could have been caused by whatever tool they used to removed the drive. I sent the same pic to the original shop, and he asked that I bring it in, cause he can't figure what is going on in the picture...I think I'll pass. BTW, that is the exhaust bellows...universal-bellows sits higher.

Re: Bellows replaced now "whine" in drive???

its possible the aft exhaust bellows clamp was mispositioned and caused the scuffing. lets hope so.
looks like some of the mobile guys and shops work from my area.

It is ashame, you pay good money for these shops to do a job right and this is what you end up with. I am currently looking for a "good" shop to take my boat to in my area, but after having similar issues with another shop, I'm not sure who to trust.
If I get a "call back" at work, I am called in to the office and given the third degree!! These boat shops act as if they don't care.

Re: Bellows replaced now "whine" in drive???

Am I seeing things or does that bellows look used with signs of cracking?
It looks like the worm clamp was hitting the area where the bearing is causing this gouging. I have learned if these clamps are not in the correct location, you are asking for problems.

Oh and this is why I am doing my own work from now on.
