I have been a very happy owner of a 2009 20hp Tohatsu, new out of crate.

It has and does run like a gem, except for one thing. I notice a build-up of sediment in the engine, and I was wondering if it was oil or dirt debris, but it seems almost like little shavings of rubber.

Instead of inspecting the belts myself I have plans to bring it to my authorized dealer since it is under warranty. I just have to drive 75 miles or so to do so.

Before I do that, I am just curious if anyone has had a similar thing happen and whether or not I am on the right track.

Thanks so much!

Anything is possible, but our dealership has never had to replace a worn belt on an MFS15/20 due to throwing "belt dust".

Hello 1979,
I am supprised at the previous post. If you can't find the area that is shaving rubber from your timing belt I would be runnig back to your dealer before the weather gets any better. first to document the problem with the dealer. Second to make sure you don't do damage to the motor. It could be as simple as a bad belt.
which end does the buildup seem to be the most. Prevention is worth a pound of cure!

What does your dealer say. It would be a new one if there is a shedding belt problem on the 15/20.

I am planning a trip in that direction early next week (75 mile drive to dealer). I was planning on calling in for appointment availability a couple days ago and forgot, so will do that now.

Thanks for the replies, and I will keep you posted on what the diagnosis ends up being.

"I notice a build-up of sediment in the engine"

What does that mean? Do you mean some kind of residue laying on the exterior of the engine block or are you referring to dirty oil from the crankcase?
