Belt replacement schedule

Hi all,
just giving some thoughts to some preventive work this spring when I have my 98 Four Winns readied for summer. I'm the second owner of the boat and have had it for 3 years. I've never had a problem with either of the V belts and am considering having them replaced at the start of the season. They don't look cracked or worn, no squeaks or squeals, but I suspect they could be originals Just wondering if anyone had recommendations about this. Buy an extra set and keep them with me to replace when one breaks, have them replaced and keep old ones for spares ?? I don't believe the replacement is too difficult, loosening one of the pivot points and slide off. With the belt closest to the motor, it would require removal of the outer belt to get to it, but still manageable on the water.
Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance.
Keith

My suggestion is to do what you feel comfortable with . . . having a spare set of belts and the related tools is a good thing.

There are too many variables such as how hot and moist your engine room gets etc. to have a hard and fast rule. Try taking off one belt and flex it backwards. If you see cracks on the surface that meets the pulleys than it might not be a bad idea to replace them. Just remember it's always easier to do it at the dock or on land rather than wait and have to mess with it when you're out on the water.

Thanks for the ideas, I agree that changing them in advance is easier, but always wonder if I might make a good situation... worse. I think I'll do that inspection on both belts this spring, and if they look good, leave em in place, but also buy a replacement set to keep on board. By doing the inspection, I'll be sure I can get them off/on and that all the pivots points are free so that I can be certain I can do it easily on the water if needed. Thanks again, best wishes for the new year... Keith

Keith -- you are procrastinating and I suspect you are not sure you are capable of doing this correctly. If you are unsure about the service life of anything on your boat NOW is the time to inspect it and replace it if necessary -- not when you are on the water. Having to replace belts on the water when you have a boat full of people who are getting anxious because you dragged them out on an unsafe boat does not make for a fun day. You also run the risk of not having the proper tools and that leaves you looking for a tow. If for no other reason, change them so you can be assured you can do it on the water if necessary. Making a good situation worse sounds like a lack of confidence.
