Started in on my winter project to redo the vinyl on the bench seat. Got everything apart and can't decide on what to line the rear of the back rest of the bench seat. It previously had carpet on it... Not sure I want to go back with that. It faces the engine compartment so I guess the options are vinyl, paint or go back with carpet. One thought I had with the carpet was that it may provide some noise/vibration isolation and if that's the case, i'd probably lean in that direction. Opinions?

This is the back rest part of the seat in question:

Yeah, foamed back carpet would be my choice for the reasons you stated.

While looking for something to reduce engine noise I ran across a highly recommended product on a car restoration site called Frost King. It is an adheasive backed, metallic faced insulation for metal ducts that reportadly works exceptionally well at reducing interior noise and blocking radient heat. Comes in a roll 12 or 16 inches wide. Around $18.00 at Home Depot. I bought a roll to use after I remove the 4 speakers the factory mounted in the front of the doghouse (truely a brilliant location when engine is running) but since I haven't done that yet I can't attest to it's effectiveness.
