Wondering if this procedure taken from the CDI electronics website can be used on johnson rectifiers?
"Rectifier/Regulator Bench Tests
1. Diode plate check:
With all wires disconnected from the rectifier/regulator, using a meter set on its Diode scale, test the diodes
from each of the two battery charge wires/terminals (typically Yellow wires/terminals) to the Red wire/terminal.
You should get a reading one way but not the other. Check the resistance from each of the Yellow
wires/terminals to case ground. You should have a high reading, typically in the M range. The Red
wire/terminal should not read to ground, but may show a very high reading (25M ohms or more)."
In the johnson service manual I noticed that it says the Purple wire must be energised for the charge system to work. So do i have to power the purple wire before testing? Even if i did, the stator leads dont connect to any ground so im not sure if this work work or not.
Please help. I have my rectifier off and its almost $300 for a new one with no return policy. I want to confirm its dead and my problem isnt the stator. Engine is a 1992 65hp WMLE Thanks.
