what is the best DIY method for this?

I need to crease a long fold in a piece that is about 6' long for the transom area.

How thick? It can be done on a brake press in about 30 seconds. Where are you located?

I'm in NH. Might go to a shop then. Hate to spend all that money on the material only to make a mess of it.

Re: bending aluminum sheeting?

I think that you could probably build your own brake to bend this metal. If you had two pieces of plywood or dimensional lumber that had been cut very straight, you could use these.
Possible steps:
1.Mark a line on your material where you want to bend it.
2.Take your straight-lined stock and attach long perpendicular "handles" to them, and connect the ends with a cross piece.
3.Take your material and lay it flat on a table and clamp a piece of plywood that covers the width of the material from end to end close to the mark where you want to bend.
4.Take your straightened stock with the handles attached (you will need an upper and a lower piece to grip the metal) and clamp the pieces directly on the line you are bending.
5.Using your handles, bend the material to the angle you want.
Give it a try.

RZR2007 is correct - A brake press is the only way to go. Most decent shops can handle a 6' bend.
