bendix gear/starter

On the starter at top. You have the nut, then spring, then a washer of sort, then the gear that turns flywheel, then another gear under, with angled teeth that the gear that turns flywheel rotates on and rides up to flywheel. I see these parts in my parts manual. On my actual starter I do not see the washer. It seems to me this washer with the spring above it, holds down the gear that turns the flywheel down after it starts. Well when Mine starts the gear rides up the gear under it with the angle teeth. To where it slightly touches the flywheel and causes sparks. I do not see the washer on it. I think this is what hold the gear down by the spring behind it putting preassure down on washer, that in turn hold down gear. Is this correct? Can I just but this washer and put it on to correct my problem?
If not can I have this rebuilt at any local starter shop? Can it even be rebuilt being it is old? What would something like this cost? Any of you guys do things like this?

I would be suprised that the washer is causing the sparking. Take the starter apart and clean everything inside with WD40 or contact cleaner and a bunch of qtips. Tie the brushes in place with mono fishing line and put the cover over the brushes then cut the fishing line. Chrysler made some really heafty starters and chances are good you can revive it by just cleaning it.

Hi Euro
I can not understand how would dirt make it ride up the gear under it to touch flywheel. I could see it stopping but not making it go up. The washer is not there at all. The gear that turns the flywheel to start engine rides up while the engine is running due to the vibration and touches flywheel. So the starter does work, it just causes sparks when the gear rides up and hits the flywheel while it is running and turning.

Re: bendix gear/starter

Well, Noah, you have several options here. Seems to me that your starter is missing a part. You could probably try substituting a flat washer of the correct size.

First, what you need to do is to see where exactly the bendix teeth are in relation to the ring gear teeth while starting. They should fully engage, but the bottom of the bendix should not touch the flywheel ring gear. If they are engaging so deeply that the tops of the teeth are protruding well above the flywheel ring gear, then there is too much travel. The flats on the teeth should fully engage with only the tapered portions protruding.

Now, On some starters, it is possible to screw down the nut a bit more--some had a stop land on the shaft and some did not. So: if the bendix is fully engaging at start, try adding a washer and if that does not stop the problem, try screwing the nut down further.

The spring may just be old and tired. You can always try removing everything and stretching the spring a bit or you can hunt up an old dead starter and salvage the bendix parts from it. Since it was a standard Prestolite starter, a good starter repair shop may have the parts for you too.

Frank, I went to a hardware store, it took awhile but I found a washer of the correct size. After doing my carb also, today I finally got everything together and again, you da man. The washer workes great. No more sparks from the bendix gear touching flywheel after starting. The spring against the washer holds the bendix gear down after starting. Thank you

o where it slightly touches the flywheel and causes sparks. /quote]
Sorry I misunderstood the spark issue. I thought they were coming from the starter not the flywheel rubbing against the gear.

Hi Euro
No problem. You have been a big help and I took your advice also and took apart the starter and cleaned inside and out. Much Thanks.
