bennett trim tab problem

when i operate my trim tabs my volt meter goes way down and my motor backkfires thru my carb. what could this be and what could i check

Couple things you can check. Common problems that will cause this type if issue more often than not.

Battery condition- have it load tested. Just because it shows 12+V 'at rest' doesn't mean it's 'good'

Go back to the Bennett electrical stuff at the switches and transom. Take all the connections apart and clean them. Look for corrosion in the ends of the wires that would indicate you either need to cut them back or run new ones. Same with the relays. Remove and clean them.

Chances are good that either your battery is weak or you have dirty connections that are creating excessive resistance. The engine backfiring is due to the battery being drawn down too far to fire your ignition properly.

Check the ground on the back side of the pump (have to remove the cover) and where it is terminated to the ground bus. This is the only thing your engine and the tabs have in common...

kenrahe,

Can you tell me what type of boat and how old the Trim Tab system might be? Also are the moving when you operate them (it's not clear in your post).

Seabob is on the right track. I would suggest that you clean all the electrical connections in the system, paying particular attention to both ends of the black ground wire at the pump.

Let me know what you find and I will be delighted to help get the problem fixed.
