if the prop is a bit bent , how long would it be before you damaged the outdrive ?

I'm thinking it wouldn't take very long , as the prop being out of balance must damage the seals, no?

I'm a bit of a newb to boating so bear with me if these are stupid questions.

Re: bent prop question

It depends on where the prop is bent, how it is bent, and the degree of damage. I take it you are experiencing vibration or you probably wouldn't have asked the question. If that's the case, a new prop is far cheaper than repairing the lower unit damage caused by the vibration. And the seals are the cheap parts. Bearings, shafts, gears, and labor get spendy really quick. You should also check to make sure you didn't bend the prop shaft. you can check that by fastening something pointed, like a pencil or pen to a block of wood. Position the pointer at the very center of the prop shaft while rotating the propeller (do this by hand for heavens sake -- not with the engine running). If the shaft is bent, the center of the prop shaft will wobble around the pointer.

Re: bent prop question

thanks for the advice silvertip.

I think you're right, a new prop is rpobably the best course of action than risk using it and doing more damage.
