Hi, Guy's

I have a 1989 Johnson 48 special o/b model# J48ESLCER, and the prop shaft is bent. I know the shaft cost a few hundred new! but on a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to replace. and do I need any special tools. and what other parts should I replace while I have it apart?

the motor does run. as far as knowing how many hrs are on it, I have no clue. I think it's worth fixing.

Thanks,

AL

a good machine shop can fix a bent prop shaft if its not too far gone. mine was bent pretty good on a previous motor i owned, took it in and an hour later it was just like new. 50 bucks is better than 200 plus. on a scale of 1 to 10 takeing it out rates about a 2. replace all the shaft seals while you have it out.

Another possibility is finding a lower unit on one with a blown powerhead...

I know near me there is a shop with a lot of old outboards just sitting around.

A machine shop sounds good to me! Thanks Cougar.

BTW, is there any special tools I would need to remove the shaft?

Bob!
do you have a ph# for the place you mention? I'll give them a call to see what they have. I bet a lower unit can be costly???

Thanks, Guys

I don't think it would be cost effective to ship a lower unit from VA. I was thinking you could find a boneyard near you that might sell one cheap!

not sure about special tools, mine at the time was a 60 mariner that had a plastic ring that kept the carrier in the lowerunit, and since i planed to buy a new one i just took it out with a srrew driver and hammer.it was threaded in there.other than that it came out easily. a manual goes a long way in helping as motors are all differnt in one way or another and what worked for me may not work for you.
