Bent starter bolts....

I replaced the starter on my 1985 350 mercruiser in 2001. It was one of those new gear reduction starters that look closer to a jet ski starter than something that has to turn over a v8..I have had to replace the starter bolts at the end of every year because they bend slightly enough to cause starter / flywheel misalignment...Dealer suggests buying a new starter when there appears to be nothing wrong w/ the $300.00 starter I purchased..Is this a widespread problem...???

Try a higher grade bolt. Like at least an 8.

Thanks Quantum...I've thought about that but was concerned that I would end up w/ a cracked block rather than a bent bolt...Sounds like Mercruiser is using a cheaper grade of bolt...

Thanks again

Mount a front brace on it........
Something like the little "L" bracket on some 3.0ls.........
And grade 8 bolts.......
I'd be Worried about the Ring Gear........
Bad starter alignment will Really Tear it Up........
