BEP VSR Install help

I bought a BEP 125 amp VSR but I'm unsure how to connect it. BEP's wiring diagram shows 3 additional isolators, 1 start battery isolator, 1 house battery isolator and 1 emergency start isolator.

I was under the impression I just wired my two batteries up to this VSR and I was good to go. Am I missing something? Do I need to buy some isolators for this to work?

What they call isolators are just on/off switches. Just hook it up to your two batteries along with a ground wire.

Hmm I did that.

Pos of Batt 1 to BEP Battery 1, pos of batt 2 to Second Battery on BEP...and ground to the Ground terminal on batter1...to no avail!

And what happens when you start your engine?

Which model do you have? Looks like on one model only one side has the sense on it so you may need to swap connections so that the side that has the sense is going to the battery that normally is used to start your engine.

Heh I'm thinking the LED isn't lit because they both have a good charge with the engine off. I haven't looked when the boat was running to see if the LED was on and chargine them...duh!

When the engine is started and the start battery reaches 13.7 volts, the VSR engages, allowing two battery banks (start and house) to be charged simultaneously. When the voltage drops below 12.8 volts (eg the engine is stopped), the VSR disengages, separating the batteries

I have the BEP 710-125A Single Sense

Re: BEP VSR Install help

Since you have the single sense version is the side that has the sense connected to the battery that is connected to the alternator?

Easiest way to tell if it is working is to measure both batteries. If both are at the same charge voltage, then its working.

Re: BEP VSR Install help

It's working. The way I have the VSR mounted it's tough to see the LED but sure enough...with the engine running it's charging the Deep Cyle. My volt meter on my dash was dropping to 12v so I'm a bit worried I might get stranded draining both batteries but if this thing works the way it's intended I will have no problems. I will throw a volt meter on both batteries and the 1st should have more voltage than the second...easy test.

With the engine running, both batteries should have the exact same voltage if the VSR is working properly.

Re: BEP VSR Install help

If you have this installed correctly your volt meter when engine is running should exceed 13.5 volts usually over 14. I use these types of relays on all my boats (not this brand because you pay for the name) but still operate the same.
Very simple to install don't make it complicated. As you have noticed in the direction and diagram BEP shows you isolation switches... they want to sell you those too! The relays I use have a built in overload protector to disconnect if there is an overload for any reason. Yours probably does too. The switches can be convenient if you need to combine batteries for some reason like cold starting if your starting battery fails but to me they are just something I can forget to turn and end up with problems.
