Been ran in salt water. Trying to pull the carrier out to put seals for the output shaft. Tried the conventional puller, as well as a slide hammer. This thing has not budged. Any ideas on getting this thing off? Thanks....

Welcome aboard the board!

Forgive me but can we assume all 4 bolts are out?

I'm sure they are so we're to the "lets add heat" stage. Look inside the housing and get an idea of where the front end of the carrier is. While the puller is attached and has pressure on it, apply heat to the outside of the case where the front of the carrier is. Some may be needed on the back end also. Remember, the case is aluminum. It will melt. Keep moving the flame and go side to side.

The good news is that the puller can add pressure without you holding it and the torch requires only one hand. Use the other hand to hold an adult beverage to ward off frustration.

Take your time.

Good luck!

Dehadley, I like your style, a man could also try an electric heat gun if a flame wrench wasn't available.(can also be used with one hand)

Yes all 4 bolts are out. Just heated it up, with pressure on the puller. guess i'll give it a few minutes, and heat it up again in a little bit. I will repost with the results.. Thanks for the replies...

hello. OMC mkes or made a tool that looked like long J bolts.usually you have to grind a taper on the side that goes against the case. but anyway the j style pullers slip into your puller body and are retained there with a cross pin. the J ends hook behind the bearing carrier legs. this is the best puller I have used so far. it will also work with Merc and yamaha as well.
if you cannot find them call Ron's marine at 757-397-3451 and ask for robert tell in tom from kitty hawk said he would know :) good luck btw the tool is about 60 dollars

I am going to drill out this bolt. Been soaking it with penateating oil for the last few days. If it still does not come out, i am just going to take it to the shop to get done. I will post with what i find...

The next size bigger tap works well when those bearing carrier threads strip (or the puller bolt has to be drilled out). Heat it up good & let it cool a few times, even over a couple days, all the while keeping the puller on good and tight.

Be patient, give it a few hot/cold cycles to break stuff loose, it'll slide out of there.

I keep the puller real short, minimizing the tendency for it to tilt to one side.
