I have an old '83 Johnson 60HP 2-cyl that's still hanging in there and does the job. I was thinking about repowering the boat and got sticker shock. My local dealers want $7200 for a 75HP Merc or $8000 for a 70HP Suzuki....so...I'll be using the Johnson for a long, long time.

Anyway...I just bought the boat a couple of months ago, been using Penzoil XLF for older engines and regular fuel. My local ramp/bait shop sells YamaLube from a 55 gallon drum, cheap, if you bring your own empty jug. And I was told recently that I should be using premium fuel, not regular.
the extra fuel cost doesn't matter to me, I just want to use what's best.

So, what is the best fuel/oil combo for a 25 year old outboard like mine?

The oil must be NMMA CERTIFIED TC-W3 outboard motor oil. That is the industry standard. Oil with some sort of double-talk such as "meets TC-W3 specifications" is not the same thing. If it is truly certified it will say so and have the NMMA logo on it.

Regular unleaded is fine.

100% Synthetic outboard oil will give you less smoke and sheen on the water and is bio-degradeable. But still look for the NMMA logo and TC-W3. Semi-synthetic is almost as good.
