This motor has four carbs that seem to be easy to plug up. I have been told that the jets on the modern motors are so small that they clog easily with old fuel etc. Our reg fuel has ethanol in it--would it be better to use the high test premium gas? I couldn't run it for six weeks this summer, so I put fresh gas in the tank. It barely started. Run rough for about five minutes then it smoothed out. When I tried to go high speed it bogged down and killed.

Any 87 octane fuel is fine but you need to install a fuel/water separator from Walmart, Yamaha or Racor, and use Stabil Marine stabilizer all the time. I also use Ringfree all the time. If your fuel is clean, fresh and stabilized then you will eliminate most fuel related problems. Also drain your carbs a couple of times per year just to be sure. Good Luck!

Because of those small jets and carb passageways, be sure to use a fuel stabilizer all the time and add it when the gas is fresh. That way if the motor is unused for a month or two, the fuel won't plug up the jets with varnish. It's cheap insurance.

Yep, that's right. Sounds like your carbs are due for a cleaning now, but if you keep your fuel right after that, probably no more problems. My motor is a 1999 Yamaha 90HP 2 stroke and the carbs have never been cleaned and the motor runs just like new. Drain your carbs onto a clean white rag so you can see what's in them, then with the drain plugs out, pump your primer bulb to "flush" the float chambers...real easy to do! Good Luck!

Thanks for the good advice. I know one cannot be too careful when it comes to these
modern motors. I will look for the fuel and wate sep. But I thought that was the purpose
of the glass bulb filter on the motor?

That little filter on the side of the motor under the cowl is just a mesh screen and will only filter relatively large pieces of trash and some water but the fuel/water separator(Walmart $27)looks and acts much like the oil filter on a car, stopping just about anything including water. After I installed the fuel water separator there's almost nothing at all in the little filter any more but I still check it from time to time just to be sure. A lot of folks(especially the filter cartridge manufacturers) recommend changing the cartridge once or twice a year but I've been just unscrewing mine and dumping the trash and water and put it back on with no problems at all. You'll have to use your best judgement on that. The fuel/water separator is cheap, easy to install with 2 screws, easy to service and worth it's weight in gold for preventive maintenance. Good Luck!

Thanks Robert

I will pick up one of those. It sounds like cheap insurance.
