best hole shot?

hello and good day, I have a 1988 2.3l ford engine with an omc outdrive, all stock items. I am using a 13 1/4 x 17 prop, I would like a better hole shot to get skiers up. this prop does well on high end, 40mph@4500 rpm. I do not mind loosing the top end a bit for a better hole shot. I was told this engine can run at 5400 rpm, but that seams way to high for this engine. should I go to a 4 prop? Or just a lower pitch and keep the three blade.
thx for your help.
Rob.

Re: best hole shot?

Generally, the higher the revs you run, the shorter your engine's life

Think about this mathematical equation Engine wear = RMPS squared

engine wear @ 2000 rpms = 4000000
engine wear @ 4000 rpms = 16000000
engine wear @ 5500 rpms = 30250000

So going from 4000 to 5500 pretty much cuts your engines expected life in half.

So yes, your engine may run at that rpm, but I would never stay up there for very long.

In terms of a better hole shot, yes, just run a lower pitch and you should have no problems.

If your running a 17 pitched prop now, try a 15, or if you want to be extreme, and have 2 props, one for cruising and one for skiing, keep your 17 and get a 13 aswell... going from a 17 to a 13 would make a HUGE difference in hole-shot.
