Hi fellow boaters!
I have been looking at inflatable tow toys and was wondering if you can post what you have and it's pro's and con's.
I am looking for a 2-3 person towable that would be stable yet be able to get a little crazy with too.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

_hope this is the correct forum_;)

Re: Best inflatable toy/ski tube?

I use a 72" round tube, and one of those inflateable jetski looking things. We have used a 2-person tube where they sit next to each other. The downside that we didn't realize is the two people can get knocked together and hurt if you hit a bump right, so when we use it we go real easy, now. The big round tube is the best thing we have used, and it's very versatile. If you are only gonna get one I would recommend it, and if you have more than one, it should be in the arsenal anyway. Don't go with the little round tubes (42" and under) they suck to ride.

Never been much of a tubist myself but I thought I might mention something. The "flying" type are not allowed on my lake. I don't know if that's common but you might want to check if you were considering one.

Excellent advice supernova!! thank you. Exactly what I was looking for in a response. We had been eyeballing a 3 seat triangle seadoo, I believe a 92". Maybe we will rethink that now. Don't want mom, dad, or kids all banged up and crashing all the time. Is that big tube pretty stable when ya whip it to the sides?
Ever used any of these "flying" type tubes. They are square and bent up in the front?
Thanks again and if anybody else has a recommendation please put in your 2 cents.

Thanks for the heads up.

Several people severally injured and I believe a few deaths on the flying type. The company recalled them ...

They all seem to have pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we still go back to the old tractor inner tube - just watch out for the valve stem! OUCH!

The big tube is very stable when you swing it and it's not a "flying tube" but with the diameter and the covering adding to it's windage, you can get some decent hangtime off a good wave. Everybody loves it; the little kids can sit inside it because the covering makes a floor in the center and the ladies can sit with their butts in the center and their legs hanging over the edge like a lounge chair and it's very stable to ride that way, either facing forward or backwards. And the daredevils can ride it laying down or kneeling on the edges. The jetski thing stays pretty tight behind the boat, you can't really swing it out at all and it bounces fore and aft like crazy at slower speeds, but the younger children (6-12) love it and some the ladies enjoy riding it too. If you're a guy it's fun watching the ladies ride it( if you get one you'll see why).

I was wondering the same thing about these inflatables. The wife and I have been thumbing through the Overtons catalog and there must be 4-6 pages of tubes. If anybody can give some ideas it would be helpfull. How about some brand names? Thanks!

Best thing I can say is "DO NOT LET MY OLDEST DRIVE THE BOAT!":D (at least while tubing)

Re: Best inflatable toy/ski tube?

It's all a matter of preferences, I guess. I like the round tubes in the 54"-80" range. It's a good all around tube that anybody can ride and isn't scary looking for the meeker crowd. Most of them are vinyl tubes and price usually is dictated by the thickness of the vinyl(expressed in "mils") with thicker obviously better. Most have a nylon type outer covering which is where the tow rope is anchored and any grab handles are attached. The covering also closes off the hole in the center of the tube from the bottom so you can sit with your derriere in the center securely without it hitting water. The better tubes have an inflateable floor section that gives a little extra padding. Mines doesn't, but I usually palce a throwable type seat cushion in there; it works well and doesn't fly out even on hard spills.

We also use a jetski-type towable, and it's good for the little ones and anybody who wants a really mild ride, but you can't swing it out of the wake very easily, so it can be a boring ride for more daring riders. It also doesn't jump very well. The only thing it does well is bounce fore and aft a lot. Which has it's advantages at times ;).

We also have one of the two person sitting side by side jet fighter type towables, and my opinion is they're dangerous. We already had incidences of heads being knocked together and missing teeth. So we don't use that one very much anymore and I don't recommend them for any but the most gentle towing, like in no-wake zones where people just want to ride out back and get a little wet going from the launch area to the real ski area or whatever. Or maybe a really young one wants to ride next to mom or dad and you're going to go real slow anyway.

As far as brands, they're all pretty good. My round tube is an O-Brien I got from K-mart about 9 years ago, we use it hard and it's still going strong. The graphics faded a little and the foam on the grab handles is gone, but the tube still holds air and the cover hasn't torn anywhere.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents, for what it's worth. I don't have any experience with any of the newer style tubes like the Sumo or Twister or any of the chariot style tubes so I can't help you there.

We have a bonzai, I think made by sportstuff(maybe not though). Any way we bought it last year at Costco and love it. They have them now. Its shaped kind of like a half-pipe, two person, and 99$ its a steal. Overtons has the exact one, made by the same manufacturer but a different name for 150$ more.

The infamous valve stem, yes, it will put an 18 inch long blood blister on ya...

We've had the big 2 person seadoo towable for several years now. Unlike with supernova, we've had no problems with people bouncing into each other. Whatever you go with, go big.

Re: Best inflatable toy/ski tube?

We have a side-by-side type and accidents can happen. I was riding with my 10 year old on father's day 2006. We got dumped hard and her head hit my chest. Through a life jackets, I got at least one cracked rib and she had a headach for 2 days (probably a mild concussion). But that is the only problem.

We also have a $60 small round tube from Wally World. Don't do it. It is for two people but does not have enough air to keep the nose above water without pulling the front up. Stick with the bigger tubes.

If you're considering one of the flying tubes, go to "youtube.com" and search for flying tubes. Then you won't want one anymore.

I went ahead and got something I thought would be the best of both worlds.
It's 6'x6' feet and comes with a cargo net too...
What you guys think?

That one looks like it should be a ball and the ability to carry things in it securely is an added bonus. I hope you have fun with it.

Re: Best inflatable toy/ski tube?

Ok I'm bumping this to the top as I could use some advice now.

We've been using a 48" Sportsstuff Zip Ski tube for the past four or so years. It has been well enjoyed and often overloaded. We have gone through two sets of handles and on the last trip we ripped the back of the covering wide open

I'd been thinking I would just get another but I checked the specs on the tube and it is only rated to 170 pounds and most of us are closer to 200. We are using this tube with an 18' Blue Fin Sea King with a 65 Evinrude, it moves along nicely and has as much speed as I can stand.

I think I want a tube a bit bigger but don't want a huge one that will be a pain to fit in the boat. It also needs to be closed bottom for when my little brothers and cousins go for a ride.

The closest I have found so far has been the Sportsstuff RIOT. I'm looking for something that will hold up well with regard to handholds and the covering. Are the Sportsstuff world class tubes any better than the less expensive ones?

Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks,

Erik
