Lake Travis is a good start. Huge, lots of coves but can get crowded. Second choice would be Possum Kingdom.

I would pick Canyon Lake (near New Braunfels and San Marcos) - the water is very clean (but deep), and about 75 degrees during the summer time. The lake was built and maintained by the Army Corps, so the boat ramps and facilities are all adequate and in good shape. The lake is fed by the Guadalupe, the fishing is good up river and near the damn. Nice scenery...if the lake gets old, you can always tube the river down below. :D

I also thought of lake Somerville (not far from Bryan/College Station) its a big lake...not too deep, clean, decent fishing, and from what I could tell, a nice sandy bottom. There's lots of camping facilities with boat facilities as well.

In my opinion there are 3.

1. Ray Roberts for crappie
2. Possum Kingdom for Stripers
3. Lake Whitney for both White Bass and Stripers.

Other excellent lakes are Lake Fork, Texoma, and Aquilla.

Went to the Sheppard AFB annex at Lake Texoma back in'69. What a great place.

I use Canyon lake, I also recommend Belton Lake in Belton TX. Right outside Ft Hood/ Killeen.
