I am new to the outboard ownership world. I did a search and didn't find any info on this.

After removing the cowling to inspect the engine, I see years of oil and junk on the outside of the engine. What is the best way to thoroughly clean it up? I have used engine degreasers on autos in the past and it seems to work pretty well. Can I use these products on the outboard? If so, what should be covered to protect it from water besides the distributor? Is there a drain that will allow water to exit that runs down toward the lower unit below the block? I suspect most of the water and grime will run down into the housing below the block.

Thanks for your advice.

Tilt the motor so the carbs are facing down. Don't spray the water in a direction that would get water in them. Avoid the distributor, but it should be fairly well sealed. Let it bake in the sun when you're done and run it as soon as possible. Heat from the motor should evaporate anything the sun doesn't. Any degreaser you'd use on a car motor will work just fine. Those motors are well equipped with cavity drains. You might try blowing them out because sand and mud sometimes clogs them.
