Ok Experts, This is for a 1997 Nitro Bass Boat.

I have tackled the motor and got it running like a lion, the heavy oxidation on the boat is in process of being restored to factory Shine or Better. Using my Rotary and PC to do the job on that along with much wet sanding and Meguairs products. WHew!!! what a job alone that is. But it is coming --i will post pictures soon.

So I have come this far and everything looks great on the boat--Except the original 1997 Carpet--IT NEEDS TO GO!!!!

So, what is the best method of removing the carpet!

1. Just peel up a corner and start pulling?
2. Use Acetone over a panel and let is soak and then Pull it up?
3. What about after removal of carpet? do i use a 3m adhesive remover to remove the remaining glue?
4. Any thoughts here would be much appreciated !!

Thank guys

What are you going to replace the carpet with? Paint? New carpet?

Yes pulling off the old is a PITA and you can use some chemicals to loosen the glue but good luck. It usually turns into a real mess of goo...... lots of scraping is in your future.

If you are going to go with a more modern carpet then a little glue left will not hurt and it may be the fastest repair method.

Yes i am wanting to go back with 20oz marine grade carpet. Was looking at http://bassboatcarpets.com --thinking about putting down the Medium Gray. Gets really Hot in Texas and I think this would look nice on my Blue/gold metal flake boat. I hope to pull it off in the section(panel) that it fills so i can take each one and use them as templates for the carpet to go back in. Figure this would save time on measuring and all.

I just wanted to know if I should just start pulling or use heat to get it lifted or chemicals. Chemicals seems like it would really be messy --but I am not the expert and this is my first carpet job--although i find myself to be pretty handy. I figure if you can read and understand you should be able to do this.

Let me know :D

First thing I would do is start pulling and see where you get with that method. If you already have the adhesive remover you can try some on a spot and see what happens, either way a lot of scraping is in your future.

You will want to level out the high spots and make sure all the loose stuff is removed, but some left over old adhesive should not be a problem...

Re: Best Method to remove Carpet from Bass Boat

Thanks Guys,

I will post pics when i get the chance. Right now i am battling the outside of her with oxidation and just purchased my first Porter cable 7424 and a Rotary buffer along with a 6" orbital sander as the wet sanding is hard on the arms.(so far it has taken me a good 8 hours of by hand wet sanding with 1500 grit and i only have half the boat done).HAHAHAHA..will finish up this wednesday when i wake up from working all night...My first project and not that she needs alot but she is mine and i want her to look brand new again.

This is too far away but this is her now...1997 Nitro Bass Boat with a Force 120hp motor.

In just a short week i knew nothing about boats, motors, trailers, NOTHING--i am in the medical field. so this is all new to me. I bought a Clymer manual and began to go to work. So far, this is what i have taught myself how to do and have done it with success.

1. tune up--spark plugs, ignition, bought a remote starter and a compression gauge and figured out how to hook it up and check compression. good compression-147,147,150 ad 150.
2. changed the lower units gear oil
3. put a 9" setback plate on her and double nuted the motor to the plate
4. changed the prop to a SS 22p TSO prop. Now she moves-- GPS-52mph at 5100 rpm's. with a max rating of 5250 rpm's. so i am there....:)
5. outside hull is being worked on now --heavy oxidation on horizontal surfaces.
6. water pump and thermostat replaced. This is a ***** trying to figure out how to get this thing to line back up with the midleg and get it in the proper gear--but she is back together and working like a dream.
7. Carpet is Next on the list
8. couple places where there are nicks on the gelcoat --but I will let the pro's fix that. shoudn't be much for a few nicks and cuts.
9. Seats need to be re-done but not a priority right now as they are holding up pretty good --just need to look at doing them in the next year or so.
10. Time for enjoying the boat is what it is all about --and cathing my first 10lb LUNKER !!!!!

Anyways enough of the rambling on and on.

You really cant see her up close but the oxidation is horrible and the carpet is old. here is a better pic of the oxidation and let me tell you what a job this has been trying to get this stuff off.

Anyways thanks guys for your help--will come back when the job is done as i feel i have much work ahead of me. But I am used to work..I live for it. Working 12 hours shifts at the hospital 5-7 days in a row will make you man. Especially working 7p-7a night shifts.

no stranger to work--actually love to work. kinda of a workaholic but thats ok i guess --i work hard but i also like to play hard as well. ;)

Everyone have a wonderful day --I plan on it...

Skyboy, It's been since Oct 2009 since Lunker updated this thread & since Dec 2010 since he posted to iboats. There should have been a big red banner asking that the thread be considered closed since it's been inactive for 90 days or more. This thread was definitely dormant.

Watch for the banner on inactive threads, and avoid posting to them. Use the PM system if you need to reach the original poster ([OP] next to their user name) or start a thread specific to your project.

Bob is a mod & should also be available via the PM system. But a redirect to questions about your own project is considered a hijack of Lunker's thread. Try to avoid that too.
