i have a 2 stroke 110 hp johnson-J110 TLCUR.
what is the best running temp.
i have just replaced the water pump , after it was overheating.
i will be testing with one of those laser hand held temp gauges .
what distance should i hold the laser from the cylinder head when i test it- i have noticed that distance does effect the result.
thanks

Re: best operating temperature

About 128 degrees but that is the water temp. Have you changed the thermostats? The deflectors? The water pump is only part of the equation.

It is only necessary to post your question once and not in multiple locations.

Re: best operating temperature

thanks bob
sorry abouyt the multiple post- new to this forum- see now how it works thanks
havn't replaced deflectors or thermostats .
the overheat was from picking up some kelp.
the o/b mechanics at the johnson dealership said that a water pump running dry can ruin the water pump- so i changed that first.
could the "kelp" overheat cause damage to the thermostats and deflectors too
thank you very much

Re: best operating temperature

Yes damage to the stats and other parts can happen in a overheat situation. The amount of time the motor was run will have alot to do with just how much damage was done. The shorter the time the less damage. If it was quite some time the motor will fresse up and alot of damage can be done.

Re: best operating temperature

Hold the laser about 8" from the top of the block just before the cyl head. Do both sides. About 125* at idle and no more than 160* at WOT.
