Re: Best outboard overall...

well everyone has their own preference, there's nothing like a best overall, some people found some engines better than others because they might have had problems with a specific brand and some not, they are all man made objects so they all break every now and again all depending on how you take care of it, it also depends on what you are using your engine for ... different strokes for different folks ..

The best overall outboard is the one in use by a happy boater.

That covers a lot of brands and models.

one that is presently running well. if you want opinions atleast state a horsepower range. what you plan to use it for trolling, crusing, toying toys.

The best outboards are the ones which have owners that perform routine maintenance at the recommended hourly intervals.

It's the one that gets you where you're going and does it consistently. For many years for me, that has been Johnson/Evinrude products.....

the smaller 2 cylinder omc of late 70 or early 80's

omc triples were bulletproof

omc v4's were even more bulletproof

never had a omc v6 i liked.

my favorite outboards are the ones that are running!

Re: Best outboard overall...

the old tried and true bulletproof 40-50 h.p 4 cylinders that made merc famous are darn good engines as far as quietness, trolling, and reliabilty especially for a 2-stroke. I had a 1972 merc 20 kiekahfer that was a nice little engine as well and my 2005 150 xr-6 V-6 has been great for me so far and hasnt missed a beat just like my other mercs. I've had great luck with mercury and because of this, i will continue to stay with and support them since i have no reason not to.

Best for what? Different strokes for different folks. Evinrude E-tec is my vote and I run a Merc and two Johnsons.

LOL I intentionally tried to start a thread to see where it went, I wanted to see what non-outboard answers I could get. I'm impressed. I loved the "one that runs right" answer. Or even the "one in use by a happy boater." Amen to that.

Happy boating!
