Was thinking ceramic pads, but have had rotors warp on Camry, rotors have slight warp in them now so maybe get them turned if enough meat left, dont care about dust, just better stopping and longevity. Rear drum brakes need replacing too, but i know they don't get used much. Has 121K on it, never tow, is a 1/2 ton truck. Any suggestions guys?? Thanks!!

Ayuh,... I buy all my brake parts at my local Napa,....

I've bought their Ok pads, their Good pads, 'n of course their Best pads, over the years,...

What I've found is,....
The Ok pads are Ok,... Soft enough to get good life outa the rotors, but not that great under Heavy/ Hard brakin' loads,....

The Best pads are just Tooo darn good, they wear Forever, but take out the rotors in only 1 set, maybe 2,...
They also are more apt to Squeal, as they're Sooo Hard,...

So,.... Now a days, I buy only the middle of the road, Good pads,...
They hold up well, but don't ruin the rotors nearly as quickly,...

Unless the mfg specs ceramic pads or you spend all your time in stop and go or own a racecar - skip the ceramic pads. They don't work worth a crap until they get warmed up. Regular old semi-metallic work best for most folks.

If your rotors are warped, get new rotors. Turning them is temporary as the warp will ALWAYS come back.

Get good rotors. The Centrics are all I buy these days. You can get them at RockAuto. Similar quality to Brembo blanks. They aren't really that expensive either. Good value.

Always buy a new hardware kit. Very inexpensive and worth changing every time you change brakes.

I am a firm believer in ceramic pads and I only use Akebono(sometimes comes with hardware kit). I got tired of brake dust and ceramics are great for that. I run them on my Lexus GS and 99 Siverdao 1/2T. It is a myth that ceramic pads need to be hot to work properly. Many many cars come off the line with ceramic brakes and they aren't high performance cars.

Brake Pads Need to Warm Up
False: Street brake pads are designed to produce even brake torque even at very low temperatures. This is even true for exotic carbon ceramic brake systems on street-driven vehicles.

I drive a lot. I have been using centric products on my pickup for replacement rotors and pads since I first needed to service the brakes. The truck that I bought new in '06 has 281K on it. I've had great luck with them.

I keep a pair of fresh rotors on hand as it's only a matter of time before they warp decending a 7% grade every morning.

7 Brake Myths Busted: Brake and Front End

Regardless of the article, my personal experience with ceramic pads is that they don't work worth a crap until they warm up

ive had good luck using ceramic pads but it all depends on how much you are willing to pay for your parts and the type of pads depens on your driving habbits . Brake rotors anr now cheep enough that its more cost effective to replace them rather then turn them if that don't pulsate then don't turn them scuff them up with sand paper or use a duy grinder with a sand paper cookie on it

I always thought that GM got the breaks and rotors right on those trucks. They seam to last forever. I know many people who have got 80-90K out of their original pads and rotors.

The stock pads on my 09 Ram were good for 70K (and could have stayed on longer) - the rotors were still fine. I think that overall the brakes on the bigger trucks have really improved, partially because a 1/2 ton truck now days has bigger brakes than the 1 tons of the past.

That generation of Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban(ended in 99) had some of the worst brakes you can imagine. Next gen was a huge improvement.

I have also not heard great things about the Vacuum breaks from that era. They might last awhile but they don't stop as near as good as their competitors.

Thankfully my 95 K2500 has Hydroboost. :D

I have always used the middle-line brake pads from Oreilly's. I am friends with the local mechanic and he said the cheap pads aren't worth a darn. However I have used them, and although they are really freakin dirty, they seem to last pretty long on the little cars I've put them on.

Regardless of which you buy...try to locate a wholesale break and equipment warehouse. They sell wholesale to the public and stuff costs half of retail or less. I think new rotors for my GM suv were about $20 a wheel for the non-Chinese/better version and the midlevel brakes being the step under the ceramic were another $20.

Or just use RockAuto.com - make sure you sign up to get their emails, they like sending out 10% discount codes and specials for your particular vehicle if you set them up in your list.

Like Bondo, I like the middle of the road sets. Put a set of best carbon metallic pads and drilled and slotted rotors on my 2000 Ram 2500 and the stopped great, but didn't get much more then 50K out of them.

Have 106K on my 08 2500 and brakes are original. Look them over with every tire rotation (10K) and still look good, and I'm thinking this spring I might replace everything (calipers, pads and rotors) and start new. Wouldn't mind knowing who made the pads for Chrysler in 08 and pick up another set.

What must shipping charges for rotors be? Brakes and Rotors are really heavy.

You can also do a search online for the discount codes before you order. Never seen a 10% code...just 5% codes. You put the code in the "How did you hear about us" box when you checkout.

Make sure you double check Amazon. They carry brake parts as well. Problem with RockAuto is that if your order is coming from different warehouses, there will be a shipping charge from each.

Lucky you, AD. My '94 2500 (with 45k miles on it) goes thru brake pads like clockwork, every 17,500 miles. I know when it is time to change them when they start pulling to one side, on braking. I am 7k miles away from the next one and a visual inspection shows them to be right on schedule.

Fortunately, I'll be dumping it as soon as the weather warms up. I get tired of cleaning the mold off of it as it just sits due to the fact I can barely afford to drive it anymore. I also have a '91 Toyota Previa Van with 135K on it. It has been easy on the brakes but I will sell it too. I just bought a 2006 V8 Exploder to replace them both.

On my grossly overloaded '97 E150 work van, I use NAPA's best and get about 27K miles out of a set of pads. I go real easy on the brakes so I usually get 2-3 pad changes before I even turn the rotors. In 305K miles, I have had to change the rotors twice. That due to rotor cracking, not dimensional wear.

Re: Best pads and shoes for a 1500 99 Yukon?

All brakes suffer "morning sickness". it is usually the moisture that needs to be boiled off from the first or second application of the brakes - source Mac Tilton of Tilton engineering when I was discussing brake systems with him in 1991 as we were developing a liquid cooled brake system.

Rotors that are warped are junk. replace them as bruceb58 pointed out. cutting rotors is nearly the cost of new.

Centrics are good quality.

You can not have better stopping and longevity. you can have a compromise and get good stopping and good life. however generally the better the stopping ability, the shorter life expectancy of the pads and rotors.

Im hard on brakes, especially on my daily driver. usually replacing rotors with the pads after about 50k. I want the car to stop much much sooner than stock. Think about it, your brakes are the single most important thing on your vehicle. why try to skimp here. I want eyeballs bulging stopping power, especially when someone cuts me off and hits the brakes.

agreed that the '88-'99 GM's have some of the worse brakes on the market, Pickups and SUV's all included

I myself run EBC green stuff or Hawk most of the time on anything that may see an autocross course or spirited driving

for daily drivers like your tahoe Rock Auto, Carquest, Napa or even Advance Auto parts. A good semi-met is usually the case.
