If you are not loaded real heavy that prop might be OK.

You have to prop the boat so the motor runs in the recommended RPM range at Wide Open Throttle. If the RPM's are high at WOT you need more pitch to the prop. If the RPM's are low you need less pitch. Do not run that motor for long at all outside of that range with the throttle all the way open, bad things will happen. Check on your motor, but I think your 40 is the same as my 50 at 5000-5500 for the recommended WOT operating RPM's. There is a plate on the transom on the s'board side of the motor that shows the rpm range.

I have a 50 Evinrude on my 20 footer that I load real heavy, I ended up with an 11 p prop to get the RPM's in the recommended range. If you need a tach look at Tinytachs.

the prop should be around 13p for that motor and boat... thats where i'd start... sell or trade the 17p. wont work.

17 pitch on that motor is designed for a boat that will run 30+mph, A 15 pitch is for around a 26-32mph boat. I know they make a 13x11 pontoon style prop for the 40/50/55/60hp twin cylinder engines but with a small 14 foot pontoon that might be Too low of pitch.

Try using the prop tool I attached to help select a prop for your boat. The 17 is probably going to be too much prop for you, but I would try it and see. I have a 13 that will fit your motor if you are interested in it PM me.
