If you are not loaded real heavy that prop might be OK.
You have to prop the boat so the motor runs in the recommended RPM range at Wide Open Throttle. If the RPM's are high at WOT you need more pitch to the prop. If the RPM's are low you need less pitch. Do not run that motor for long at all outside of that range with the throttle all the way open, bad things will happen. Check on your motor, but I think your 40 is the same as my 50 at 5000-5500 for the recommended WOT operating RPM's. There is a plate on the transom on the s'board side of the motor that shows the rpm range.
I have a 50 Evinrude on my 20 footer that I load real heavy, I ended up with an 11 p prop to get the RPM's in the recommended range. If you need a tach look at Tinytachs.
