Best RPMs for engine

I am new to boating and outboards and have tried to read alot to become educated. My question is:
what is the best rpm to run your outboard. I know that you should be able to reach the max rpm as recommended by the manufacturer to allow your engine to last but I also hear people talking about running their engine in the "sweet spot" at a lower rpm, which, to my understanding, is not good for the engine.
Could someone explain what is best for the engine?

Thanks,
Glen

As long as the motor is capable of reaching the desired top rpm's you can run it anywhere you want. My 150 on my Dusky loves 3000 rpm. About 25 mph or so, nice cruise, wind noise not too bad, etc. Its capable of right at 6K but I bet we havent run it over 3500 the last 10 times out.

Dhadley

Thanks for the answer. I just wanted to make sure that running it at 4000rpms for long distances wasn't going to be too bad for the engine and common sense tells me that no one is always running at max rec rpms.

Appreciate the help.
Glen

As long as you can reach the recommended top rpms at full throttle with moderate load, and you run your boat above minimum planing speed, or at displacement speed, you'll be fine. It doed not hurt the outboard to run wide open, it just hurts your wallet. It sounds like you are running it at a good speed, high enough to get you there but not so high as to ruin economy.

A Pueblo indian standing on top of a mesa would probably advise you to make peace with your motor. He would be talking about that "sweet spot" that most boat-motors have. You don't find it by reading a manual or posting here - seek and ye shall find.

Wow! - Can't believe I wrote that.
