Had a bad situation with a one man shop holding my boat since Jan .
Not doing the work as contracted.
I now have a boxes of parts , new manifolds, risers, gaskets $ 3500 in parts

I had enough with this guy, Became so bad cops were called so I can retrieve my property. Boat is a 30 ft weekend cruiser
Twin 4.3 GXI engines .600 hrs. Slight water intrusion causing hard starting . Caught in time that top of engine is being replaced. Bottom is good with no water intrusion

I have a few options .
One option is a marine engine rebuilder. They offer a service which is great, bit more but one stop shopping. Drive too them 100 miles from me. Leave boat, pick up boat while they rebuild both engines, ( 3 weeks wait ) replace everything needed on outside, return with boat , install and go boating. Price is 4 thousand each motor. Since I already have manifolds & risers they will install at N.C. the heads and other internal parts they don't want since they warranty their work. They will have too replace stuff so I can expect a 10 thousand dollar bill along with the 4 grand I am with other guy

Other option
Friend of family is a Master Mechanic for Chevy . 20 plus years.
He came too boat yesterday , saying Piece of cake, Can put these engines back one full day possibly 2 . Eyes closed,
Only concern he never did marine.
Wants a good shop manual . All the electrical components are pushed back, still attached but he wanted too make sure he does job right
I know bellows should be changed what else should be done . Is there any shop manuals that walk you thru everything that should be checked or replaced while manifolds & risers are getting installed
He wants too do it right with no going back and doing over cause he forgot something
He did say this guy did a lot of the work already about 65 % completed. One engine has heads with pistons rods connected the other engine does not . All parts in boxes .
I just want engines back running . Boat is listed with broker and everything in a holding pattern

Any advice on what publication for a experienced mechanic

thanks

Getting a friend to do the work could end having a very high cost, the friendship if things go bad
