Champion QL77JC4 set at .030. For a better idle, set them at .040.

Re: Best spark plugs for '75 Johnson 115hp?

Ok. But, I had a 140hp Johnson, '83 model, that I picked up some plugs for @ a dealer and he sold me a set that didn't have a thing for gap...it was just flat across.....does this ring a bell to anyone? I forget what brand it was...would it be better to use the original plugs or these that I have described?

Thanks for your help!

The surface gap you mentioned is probably a QL16V which is an alternative plug. Stay with the QL77JC4.

Re: Best spark plugs for '75 Johnson 115hp?

For your engine, the factory recommended spark plug is as mentioned above, the Champion QL77JC4 plug, and I recommend the original factory suggested gap setting of .040.

A alternative s/plug was the Champion UL77V surface gap plug (no set gap). However this type plug, although the heat range is listed as "77", it actually has no heat range to speak of and fouls quite easily on some models.

(EDIT 01/06/05) However, it has been brought to my attention by OBJ (Post Listed Below) that a bulletin exists pertaining to a Champion QL16V. Somehow the knowledge of this plug had escaped me but OBJ graciously saw to it that the bulletin was delivered to me via email.

As OBJ suggests and from what I've read on the bulletin, the QL16V (surface gap) spark plug is an acceptable alternative spark plug for the engine as posted in this thread.

Your choice.... try and decide.

Joe....would this be another alternative to the QL16V plug? The service bulletin 2197 says the 16 plug runs hotter than the gapped plug and is good for extended low end operation...ie..trolling. Just curious for your comments.

Thanks....Jim

OBJ.... Apparently I retired prior to the QL16V bulletin. If you could email me a copy, I'd appreciate it (address below). The UL77V alternative dates way back and may very well be obsolete.

(EDIT 01/06/05) OBJ... Bulletin received, many thanks, I do appreciate it.

All right...it's settled. I'll use the Champion QL77JC4 plug. I appreciate your help.....but, there is one other question I have now. What is the difference in the two above listed plugs? Positives/Negatives? Just curious. Thanks again!!
