Hi there, originally your engine would have come with AC 41-932 which has now superseded to AC 41-993. When it comes time to change the plugs, Volvo's service number for your engine is 3858996 which translates into Champion RS12PYP. Mercruiser is flopping back and forth between AC and NGK for the same engine comparison of yours.

You have many options to choose from and the theories vary of best to worst here on iboats. AC and NGK go back and forth as being #1 while champions typically seem to come in last place between the two.

You could go with anyone of these, AC DELCO 41-993 - Alternative spark plugs or any one of these Champion RS12PYP - Alternative spark plugs and probably be okay.

All the plugs mentioned in the links can be very expensive if you do not do your homework. Marine dealers may charge almost $20.00 each but if you find the plug you want to use, you should be able to find them as low as $5.00+ each. Especially the AC's.

The most impoertant thing to know is that the iridium spark plugs are sensitive to gapping and are easily damaged if done wrong. The video linked below shows you the correct way to do it. At the price of the plugs, you'll want to watch the video.;)

Hope this helps, good luck.:)

get AC's or NGK's Champions are really not recommended unless you buy 2 sets and keep tools on hand.

Put in what it came with.

Champions are for lawnmowers and weed whackers-there is no other choice for them.

Stick with OEM. They knew a thing or two about how they wanted the engine to run.

the iridium spark plugs in my truck are rated to 100k miles. on this 05, should i even be worried about replacing them yet? Im not having any engine trouble, but with my previous engines (3.0L merc) theye were $1 each or so, and worth the peace of mind.

A boat is not a truck. At 9 years l 'd be doing a full tune-up. Another reason to at least pull the plugs and check them every couple of seasons, is to avoid having them rust in the heads.

the PO kept up with it pretty well. she had it at a dry dock marina, and let them handle the maintenance. I will pull one and see what they look like, but they may have been changed at least once.

OMG!!!!

Waited two weeks for genuine V-P parts. They arrived today.

In a VOLVO PENTA box-I GOT Champion Spark Plugs!

I guess the quest continues for the RIGHT stuff.

Does anyone have the right A/C or NGK numbers for a 2009 3.0L (red engine)?
