Greetings..
I have a 14ft Sylvan "tinny" and the top interior transom board is split and starting to rot. It appears to only be a 1x4 that stretched the width of the boat. (There is another piece on the wood on the exterior of the transom that supports the thrust of the outboard)

Would it be best to replace it with Red Oak or would pressure treated pine hold up as well. Teak would be my first choice, but I'd hate to have the transom worth more than the rest of the boat. :D

Is Oak the best or does any one have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Nav

Not Red Oak, WHITE OAK, red has very poor rot resistance, and don't even think about Pine pressure treated or otherwise.

I re-did a transom on my 14 tinny with exterior plywood that was spar varnished. I screwed a piece of 1/4" aluminum plate in place for the clamps and it has held up very well for the last few years. I hung a 15 hp off of it.
