Im looking for the cheapest tiller steer 25-30hp out of the main brands. Eventually I may want to convert it to cable steer.

I want 2 stroke.

Any recommendations?

I think looking for the cheapest motor isn't the best procedure.I think you need to determine if there is a well established
servicing dealer close by.Then look for the least expensive motor with the most features.
The Evinrude Etec 25 and 30 are direct injected 2 stroke There is no carb.It has no service required for 3 years or 300 hours no break in period, available with fingertip tilt and trim and a special trolling setting on the tiller.Made in the USA not sure we can say that about the other motors.

well in an ideal world if i had money to burn that would be good advice, but the etecs are insanely expensive. i just want a plain old 2 stroke, the technology has been round for ions.

i was thinking a merc 25 sea pro. they can be upgraded to 30hp dirt cheap i think?

What country are you in?
Ya won't find any new 2 stokes in the states.
You want new or used?
No, it is not cheap or easy to upgrade any of the motors to get extra hp.

Yep, in the States, 20 hp and lower motors are typically 4-strokes thanks to the EPA.
Also... Most manufacturers don't go to EFI until 25 hp.
In North America, Tohatsu will be the lowest-cost motor, in the 30 hp and down category.
The Tohatsu 20 and down use carbs. The 25/30 is 3-cylinder EFI.
That said, BRP has the etec, and Tohatsu has the tldi; these are 2-strokers.
The [expensive] etec starts at 25 hp and up, the tldi is 40 and up.

Any lae model, 3-cylinder Yamaha and/or OMC motor would work nicely. Tiller versions of late 90s/early 2000s Yami, 3-cylinder, 30hp motors are worth their weight in gold and only last about a day on C-list. Mid-80s, 3-cylinder models of that hp are nice too.

The newer 2 stroke Merc Sea Pro 25 is a rebadged same Tohatsu 25, both can be converted to 30 HP for less than $ 10 bucks, go for any of them if possible.

Good motors, go for it and pass it to 30 HP, just needs a 30 HP carb gasket swap + 5? advance timing and you have a factory converted 30 HP. Ain't that nice and above all real cheap conversion.

The 25 hp Mercs are very popular withe microskiff guys in FL and TX too. Btw, what is the reason behind "rebadging/rebranding" motors (e.g. calling a Mercury a Tohatsu and vise-versa)? Are they really 100% the same except for the decals, or are there other differences as well?

I do know Merc's get a more attractive cowling than the Nissan/Tohatsu... I've wondered about the LU's tho.

If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em. On a few of the Merc models, there are some slight linkage differences as well as cosmetics. The mechanicals are pure Tohatsu on all current Mercs 30 and under, Evinrudes 20 and under, and each and every Nissan.

Re: Best value 25-30hp?

The "standard" tiller 2 stroke Merc 25 is exactly same as the Tohatsu's 25 HP. Just logos and color are different. Merc has a joint venture with Tohatsu on their new Japan plant from years back. Our local Merc dealer doesn't know he currently sells rebadged up to 30 HP Tohatsu, don't want to dissapoint him, he's such a Merc fan...

To avoid model confussion...

Re: Best value 25-30hp?

Does that mean the larger HP models are made by the parent companies (e.g. a 100hp Merc is actually made by Merc, 100hp ETEC is made by BRP, 100hp Tohatsu is made bu Tohatsu)? Also, historically speaking, what is the point of a company making the product under 2 different names likes Johnson/Evinrude, Merc/Tohatsu, Ford/Lincoln, GM, etc...?

Re: Best value 25-30hp?

Some 2 strokes Merc's leftovers are still being sold as rebadged Yam engines like the 15-25 which are cable throttle as opposed to rod throttle on Tohatsus. Assume once left overs are gone will sell the new rebadged Tohatsus. You have Evinrude/Johnson, Merc/Mariner, Tohatsu/Nissan to name some. Dual name, double profit...
