Hello everyone,
I have a 1969 85hp Evinrude with Selectric shift. For years, I have had problems with it not wanting to shift from forward back into neutral after the motor warms up. I switched from cheap oil back to OMC Premium, and the situation improved a bit. I am planning a lower unit overhaul next winter, but don't have time or space right now. What I'm wondering is, what is the best method of flushing the LU? I've had all kinds of suggestions thrown at me: Dextron ATF, oil additives, diesel, kerosene, you name it. 1) What should I use, and 2) should I run the motor at all (with the muffs or under load) with the stuff in the LU, or should I just let it soak? Right now I am thinking about using ATF and running it on the lake for a while, but I don't know if this is a good idea. Any suggestions? Thanks guys!
Dave

Drain (overnight)and refill w/Premium Blend.Run (on trailer, backed into lake).Repeat until shifting is normal.

If it's not happening after 3 changes probably need to tear down 100% and clean.I would think trying to flush with other fluids would only complicate the matter.

DHP
