I have a 98 3.0l mercruiser w/ very low hours. I think it sat with very low fuel for quite a while. I have a 20 gallon tank, I filled it with about 15 gallons, added carb cleaner to the gas also. It hesitated on acceleration, so I cleaned the carb and changed the accelerator pump. The second trip out, this smoothed out the accelerating. My problem is, I changed the in carb filter and the fuel water seperator, as they were filled with crud... My question is should I just keep changing out the in carb fuel filter and fuel water sep. several more time while topping off the tank or what? The tank is very difficult to physically remove and flush out in the garage? Any suggestion and sorry for the very long story... Joe

changeing the filters a few more times is going to be the only easy way but if it keeps going at some you may have no other option

if you have to pump out the tank its going to cost to get rid of the fuel

i just tryed to pump some water out of my tank this year by removeing the supply fitting and getting a hose right to the bottom

it became apparent pretty quick that i was getting a lot of gas and very littel water so i am going to let the sepator do its thing

tommays

Run the boat until it is very low on fuel and then pump out the rest. Your fuel line in the tank should be about one inch above the bottom of the tank. I took the gauge out of the top and put my bow down so all of the fuel came forward so I could get more of it. I used a manual kerosene pump and taped an extra three inches of hose to it so it would reach the bottom. I had about 2 gallons of some of the nastiest stuff you ever saw.

Burn it out. Like Tom said, keep changing filters, use some additives if you like.
Adding fresh fuel after every run will help.

Make sure you do not have a problem with your vent or fuel fill allowing water into the tank.

Otherwise, it will cost you around $4.00 a gallon to recycle that old fuel.

When you get done and the filters are staying clean...change/clean your plugs.

One other point---put Stabil or some other fuel stabilizer in every time you add fuel. Saves you from similar problems two years down the road.

I'm with Tommays,........ Let the Filters Do Their Jobs,..........

In Extreme Cases, I've pumped out a tank before,..... Letting the tank settle,+ Pumping from the Absolute Lowest point,.... Just pump till the discharge Clears,...... What's Left in the tank is Gas,...... Why Pay to get Rid of it.........

There's No Such Thing as a Totally Clean Gas Tank,....... Even Brand New,.. There'll be Construction Debris...... ;)
