My wife and I were heavy smokers for over 30 something years. Over the years I had tried to quit numerous times using every method out there. My wife has little will power and just flat out refused to try to quit. That all ended in mid-November 2009 when I heard about an electronic cigarette. I was skeptical so I ordered the lowest priced one that I could find on the Internet. It arrived in the mail 2 days later and from that day on I have not smoked or had the desire for a cigarette. I was so thrilled that I ordered one for my wife who said she could not quit. To my amazement she gave up the real thing by the end of the week. If you want to quit or have someone you love quit this is the way to go!!
Pharmaceuticals, big drug companies, the FDA and even anti-smoking groups are trying to pass legislation to kill the E-CIG but I have found it to be a life saver.

Did you quite entirely, or do you just consume your nicotine in a different form now? I'm skeptical of these new nicotine delivery products because it seems to me that they increase the dose of nicotine without the coughing or other negative effects. What's to keep you from being even more addicted?

I found the best way to quit was to buy the crappiest cigarettes I could find and keep them around in opened packages. They tasted so nasty that I only smoked when I absolutely needed to, and it was such a disgusting experience that I quite pretty quickly.

Yes I did quit entirely. I started off with juice that had 10mg nicotine and weened down to 0mg. I found out the mechanical habit of smoking has to be conquered also. I used to carry my e-cig with me all the time but now it seldom leaves the house. I used to smoke a pack a day but with this thing I just pick it up occasionally and take a few puffs. I still enjoy the mechanics of smoking but the unrelenting craving is no more.

Dad was a four pack+ a day, Mom was a good two. Dad quit cold turkey - for six weeks you couldn't get close to him as he was a bear. He did quit though. It took cancer for mom to - she survived the cancer. I remember being out to eat 13 years later with her when someone at another table lite up. Mom took a deep breath and said to me " Jimmy, I could start again like that, the urge hasn't ever left me ". She never did start again.

Now myself, I figure as a kid I inhaled enough second hand smoke that I'll end up with the big C

I know this isn't what you probably wanted to hear but it's how it was.

Before the e-cig I quit cold turkey several times, once for 5 years. Your correct the urge never really goes away. A night in the bar with a few drinks or after the performance or during a stressful crisis the urge will come back. When they do I just reach for my e-cig (or pull it out of my pocket) take a puff or two and put it back. The weird thing is this is all it takes to curb the urge. With real cigarettes, after you light up you are committed to smoking the whole thing (maybe to get your money's worth) I spent all day last Saturday kayaking,in the old days I would have to smoke 2 or 3 cigs at each rest stop while the non-smokers were having fun doing other thiings. This time I did not even use the e-cig until I got back home and was relaxing in front of the TV. You know, different things for different people but in our case we consider this device to be a blessing. Our health has improved dramatically and hopefully this post will help someone have the success that we had. If you have negative opinions this post wasn't meant for you anyway.

When the Dr told me I had to have heard surgery at the age of 36 I stopped that day and never smoked another one.

I found the best way to quit was to finally sack up and realize I no longer "needed" cigarettes. My lungs now thank me every day as does the rest of my body. Now I see those poor saps that are left smoking. They are like slaves to it. They have no control. The cigs are their master.

Yes the best thing is having your freedom, I quit cold turkey around labor day 2009 after 30yrs of it, getting down to my last 5 cigs and to start scrounging for dollars for a trip to the convienient store, I don't miss that one darn bit. And all the above too.
Now if I could just get off these darn pain pills!

I know an e-cig guy. I'm not certain what nicotine dose he is getting but he has not lit up in a couple years. Seems to be a step forward as far as health effects go. At least I don't have to breathe his smoke and he smells a heck of a lot better too. :)
