I'm told that WD-40 can turn to rust. I've got a sticky key/ignition and a neutral button that sticks. Is there a 'better than WD-40" dry lube that I can spray into these areas and not cause more harm?

Thanks!

WD-40 doesn't turn to rust, and it's not a lubricant, but it does do some things well. CRC and many others make products for your application.

I've always heard powdered graphite was good for locks, but never tried it.

I use WD-40 on sticking ignition switches. however if its two bad, simply pay the $20 for a new one.

You may not have to replace anything. Electrical contact spray is pretty good at cleaning things up. Graphite works very well in locks. I suggest squirting some in the lock and also on the key, then exercising the key in the lock a number of times; it will loosen up. What I would NOT use is WD-40, which is a water displacement liquid. You'll note that WD-40 gets sticky as it ages, unlike the graphite or even regular 3 in 1 oil.

I have used basically all those products over the years and haven't had any issues with any of them myself, even WD40. Powdered graphite works, but don't get it on your clothes because it will mark them pretty well. If the ignition is really iffy, you could even try some penetrating type oils. Most anything will work and if it doesn't, buy a new one and replace. JMHO!

3-n-1 will varnish up over time. Maby not on a ignition switch but I've had it happen on a blower motor more than once. I now use gun oil or sewing machine oil on lots of stuff. Never had a problem yet.
