fella's I have a little BF25 Hondu and it is just a great little motor that does well indeed on gas. I used it on my 24/48 flatbottom tunnel for a couple of yrs where I live and let my son loose on it last fall....whoops! He was to back in less than 8 hours time but.....not. Went to look for him downriver some 25 miles and found him and his cousin stranded the next day....ha. Short story he used my engine lift to late in the shallow...hit pretty hard in that it sheared the key on the crank that holds the timing gear.

Fixed the timing, replaced with new key and checked valve adjustments...started right up on the second pull...great! But, when driving of late I noted some metal sound kind of "clanging" on the back side of engine around the plug area. Now I have the Honda shop manual for this motor but cannot identify the drive shaft connection at the motor to see how or what it connects to. I suspect some kind of bearing out due to impact but not sure. It does not "constantly" make the metal noise but it does happen periodically when driving for instance some 15 miles round trip.

Any ideas for me to consider for "before" I pull the motor off?

by the way this is an excellent boat forum(s)....glad to be here with so many great folks.

If you are conviced that all is well with the powerhead, it is now time to look at the gearcase.Gearcase noise can radiate up to the engine and send you chasing your tail.Pull the drain plugs out of of the gearcase and you should only see a little light grey duff on the lowwer magnetic plug.If that comes out looking all hairy with metal flake you have to look into that case.

something I did not dwell on as the prop shaft was not bent....sounds pretty reasonable to me. will drain the gear lube and check. thanks.
