no tricks just cash.
its not difficult to do just expensive, look about on the iboats site for a complete drive, takes me about 8 hours to rebuild an upper and tear down, flush and reseal a lower. parts will set ya back another easy 500 or so.
the alpha upper with a 260 HP v8 was marginal, 300 to 400 hours is about it especially pushing a heavy hull.
to figgure the gear ratio count the drive gear teeth and the driven gear teeth and do the math.

Been there done that, $1200 later (new upper case) I check my upper unit oil every time i go.........and come back. However there is a sight that is way under the market on pricing i just dont know there quality or i would have gone that way.

You really need to check your lower unit for contamination if you had shaving's in your oil and from what i understand it takes a hydualic press to get the gears in and then they have to miced into a certain spec, as for my self i left that to the pro's

hum, reading the manual it doesnt say anything about presses. Mercstuff.com has stuff for pretty cheap, should i just buy another upper or rebuild this one? I wish i could count they the teeth they are destroyed.

so do you guys think that this thing over heated on the upper? or was it just time for it to go? it is a very heavy hull.

Found out its a 1.5 ratio (or the 1.47 but they are the same i hear) is this the best to go with seeing as how i have the 260 HP?

Have you looked in the gears case it self, i cannot link to your pics. Anyways look closely at the base of the gears and the cycl wall if it's scored you are gonna need a upper case too. Maybe a whole new upper is in order i think there only 600 plus a alingment tool and gasket kit $750 + shipping pretty dam cheap if there product is any good.

Re: Big gears are stripped out on upper

they gears are toast, nothing is scored but there are shavings in the upper, the lower is clean. When i drained the oil there was no metal in it. When i took the top cover off thats how i figured out the gears were toast. I got a whole used unit on bid on ebay so if i win it i iwll just keep this one for parts and take the top apart and replace the gears so i wont ever be boatless again!
