Big Mistake??

Ran the boat out of Bar Harbor, Maine this week. Everything went well, then...

Loud ticking and knocking. Noticed very little oil on the dipstick, but no visible leaks. I think I may be burning it, but I see no smoke.

Had 6 people on-board and two were getting sick from the seas. 4-6 footers.

Made a decision to take the boat back in (14-miles) with very little oil and loud knocking.

I am fearing the worse and have yet to run it again. What kind of damage do you think was done? Also noticed the temp gauge was low at 100 degrees on the ride in. Motor also quieted at 3500 RPMs.

BTW: Bar Harbor area is a beautiful place to get some boating in.

Sure do. Don't hi-jack someone else's thread. Start your own...

As for the OP:

What was your oil pressure gauge reading?

Did it ever read zero?

I would start by draining the oil and checking it out. Any shavings, funny smells or colors?

Find out where that oil is going. Look for leaks, check your spark plugs for excessive carbon build up.

You may want to throw in a compression check to look for a dead cylinder...

Compressions OK, 120,120,130,120

No leaks.

There is build-up on the plugs, but nothing I would consider excessive.

No smoke in the exhaust either.

????

I have been chasing a power problem. Curious if this is a sign of something to come.
