I'm new to boats and I bought a 1965 niagra and I didn't notice until I went to pull the boat on the trailor a issue. In the inside at the front where you hook the boat to be pulled on the trailor the wood is like wet and the hook is sinking in. Is this a major issue and how do you fix this. Or would I be better to get out of this thing now. I have a picture of the hook I'm talking about.

Re: Big Problem Question

WOW!! yes that is a big problem, when you are pulling the boat back up, it could pull out and send the strap and hook at you , LIKE A SHOT!!!!
on the inside of the boat there are a couple bolts or nuts through the block of wood, just remove it and replace with a new block of wood.
reseal it with 3m 5200 sealant , in side and out.

Re: Big Problem Question

I'd go the extra step of sealing the block with fiberglass for longjevity.peter

P.s is there any signs of leakage there ? or a water alge ring on the inside of the boat? (indicateing Bow down storage) ? worth investigating..... pd

Re: Big Problem Question

I never even knew there was WOOD there. Mine is really solid, and at this point not really in need of anything other than a re-polishing the windshield. There is wood in there?! Wow!

Yeah Mark the bow loop has a 1x5 block ( roughly figgured ) . there are small amounts of wood in the smaller mfg's mostly backing for cleats , behind the dash and fo course the transom .
jried - should be an easy fix - These are good +fun when done ! peter

Re: Big Problem Question

The only thing I can add to that is to check for water between the fiberglass sheets under the bottom of the bow. My 70 Carefree is made with Fiberglass-sandwiched plywood. Water can get in between, and not drain out if the bow is not stored high enough.
I actually added a drain hole mid-ship under the deck.
To cure your bow ring problem, I used a 1/8x5" stainless plate on the inside of the stem, and drilled the holes for the bow ring in that. Sealed it all in MarineTex and use loc-tite on the nuts. Been solid for 12 years now.
