Big red plug

Well I got my '88 J225 up on the stand last night. Hooked up and battery, added some fogging oil in the cylinders and cranked her over some to move the oil around. While I had a plug out (grouned of course) I cranked her over and did not have any spark. Now this is with the large red plug undone. I jumped the solenoid terminals the engage the starter. I know with the older engines, they would fire with the plug undone (no grounging through key switch to kill the ignition), this is how we used to move boats when the owner didn't leave keys. Would this engine have the SLOW system and would it need power to operate? The engine will hopefully be mounted next week and I'm trying to prepare for any problems.

Re: Big red plug

it should fire with the red engine plugg disconnected. Sounds like you have more problems.

Re: Big red plug

I only tried one cylinder. I'll try the others to see if it is localized to a bank or the entire system.

Re: Big red plug

Well I have spark on some cylinders. It seems that the previous owner(s) had overlooked the coil wires (orange ones) because the had a lot of rust in them from the snap on cap. This may have been their "Dropping a cylinder problem". Now, it seems that this engine has the SLOW system on it (one box on top, behind the flywheel, and between the cylinders). My Seloc manual does not show this setup, time for an OEM I guess. The questions are, can this system "Lose" a cylinder? Can the small coil caps be replaced without buying a complete assembly? See #1 cylinder has no spark, changing the orange wires, the problem follows the wire not the coil. The power pack/module is #CD6AL/67. So if I'm correct, CD ignition, 6 cylinder with a rev limiter of 6700rpm, is this correct? Is this even the right module for a 1988 J225TXCCE? I do have my 1988 3.0l Seadrive to pull some parts from. Any help would be appreciated.

It's got S.L.O.W okay but it's all in the powerpack. I think the box behind the flywheel must be the voltage regulator.

c/6
Hooty

Re: Big red plug

The regulator looks like it sits under the power pack. I'm just wondering if they (power packs) go bad completely or if it's possible to lose just one cylinder. I can clean up the the coil terminals, but the caps (that come from power pack) are really crusty inside. I was hoping that someone could let me know if just the ends could be replaced. I can see where this would cause the problems the previous owner had stated. They had changed "some stuff" on the motor but seemed to have missed these wires.
