I have 1982 Johnson 9.9 and I am thinking about getting a new jon boat to put it on. It is on an old 14' v bottom now and will plane out easy enough if I watch the weight.

How much boat will a 9.9 Plane out?

It all depends on hull design and weight, there are 8' boats that won't get on plane with a 9.9 and I could probably find a 20' that would.

Go with a light jon boat, but I don't think you can go much bigger (if at any at all) and still get have it perform adequately.

What would you be looking for on that 20 footer?
Long and narrow or short and fat? Flat or V bottom?

Alumacraft has a 16' x 48" flat bottom that is 280# I am looking at.
It's 100# heavier but is longer wider and flat.

Re: Biggest boat for 9.9?

Doubt if your 9.9 would plane a 16x48. A popular rig around here is a 20 footer designed for running up and down the trout tailwaters. Those are frequently powered by 9.9s, but they're very narrow and light. That may be what he has in mind. I know your question is what's the biggest boat a 9.9 will plane. I can't really say for sure, but I can say I wouldn't want to push anything bigger than a 14' john boat with a 9.9. That's me, of course.

Yeah, it's amazing what those things go for. They're cool, but they're really only good for one thing. I can run my john boat all over the Little Red and the White and can take it lots of other places too. There's only so much trout fishing a guy can do.

Find the boat you want and hang your 9.9 on the back to see how it goes before buying it. Then it will be no mystery.

That's encouraging.:)
Is it flat bottom or a modified v?

I guess I should get the boat I want and try it.
Worst case is I have to trade motors.

Re: Biggest boat for 9.9?

I had a Sea Nymph TX155 (15') that i would swap my 35hp for a 9.9 Evinrude to run on a 10HP limit lake, and it would easily jump on plane with that motor. I knew a fellow that had a TX175 (17') that did the same thing and he said he was happy with it. Both boats were modified V's with console steering, I think think those Nymphs were pretty light boats though, I know mine was narrower than the 175.
