Info only, you have helped me a bunch thought I would share. I just has a local machine shop make a new shift rod bshg for my 56' 30 Hp Rd18. Clymer manual says to discard old one and I had tapped threads in my old one to remove it anyway.
Machinist used a modern oil impregnated bronze material and also designed and made a nylon installer (his idea) which absorbs inpact when driving it in. Ran about 20 bucks. I would think any local machine shop could do this. photo is atached.
Take care fellas...
