Bikini VS Bimini

I've never heard anyone talk about a "bimini" top. I've only herd them called "bikini" tops. Whats the deal? Have I heard it wrong all my life?

and same thing applies to jeeps. I cant tell you how many people I have herd call it a bikini to

OK ... Bikini is a trademarked name from Bestop, so its just a Jeep thing. Still cant count how many people including me get this wrong, ohwell now I know

They DO sell bikini tops for jeeps tho so it's not the same thing.

Never heard boat tops referred to as bikini tops, only Bimini tops (or in the case of Center Console boats, Tee-Tops). Now for Jeeps I've always heard the short cloth-only tops referred to as bikini tops.

There are several different types of "tops" for boats, but Bikini isn't one of them. There are Convertible Tops, Bimini Tops, Dodgers Tops, etc., just no Bikini tops (aside from the females aboard).

Tell the girls boats have bimini tops not bikini tops and all such improper equipment needs to be thrown overboard.

And just to clear up any future potential confusion....there are "tonneau covers" for boats, but not "tunnel covers"

A Bimini top is an open-front canvas top for the cockpit of a boat or Jeep, usually supported by a metal frame. Most Biminis can be collapsed when not in use, and raised again if shade or shelter from rain is desired. Bimini tops differ from dodgers in that dodgers include protection in front and on the sides, while a Bimini does not. The Bimini is used mostly as protection from the sun; it offers no protection from wind, rain, or spray when moving forward at any speed. Rain protection is only given if the boat is stationary and there is not any wind.

The Bimini top was invented by Paul Johnson and his company, Johnson's Marine Cushion and Canvas in Warren, Rhode Island.
