Does anyone have any thoughts on the using a bildge heater in addition to my normal winterazation?? We live in PA and winterize in late november. Would a bildge heater help with condensation build up in the engine hatch:confused:. I just wondered if this would be a good idea to keep things dry and also be an extra precaution for freezing.

Sounds like a great way to burn up your boat to me.

Re: Bildge heater?????

You can buy marine specific bildge heaters that are UL approved. They are designed so not to be a danger for fuel fumes in confined spaces. I understand that light bulbs, camp fires or a pellet stove won't work as a safe heat source and I also under stand its not a good substitute for proper winterazation. If you read the start of my thread I ask the question about bildge heaters as an ADDITION to normal winterazation not a substitution. Sometimes its just better not to post...........

I'm just a little confused at your last post......It appears you got pretty much exactly what you asked for in your first post.....

peanut; i have seen advertised, small fans to do just what you are describing. i cant see it hurting anything.
one thing i would wonder about here is--mice have a tendency to invade and i wouldn't want to make any more comfortable for them.

I think everyone is a little on edge with the season coming to an end...

I live in Ohio, and normally winterize around the same time. I think good air circulation is adequate to prevent harmful condensation. A bilge heater will certainly help, but doesn't seem practical or necessary. Condensation forms from temp changes for the most part, and more so when they are rapid or drastic. If your boat is wrapped up tight and the sun beats on it all day, then it gets very cold, you will have condensation. The venting/circulation lets the heat out and helps to prevent condensation. If you winterize it properly, and give it adequate ventilation, it should be fine.

I wouldn't think it would be necessary. I am thinking the bilge heaters are for boats left in the water. But like most have said, if it isn't someplace where there is a big temp. change you should be fine without it.
