Has anyone used the bilge pump (or a hose inline pump) to suck water as a quick fix for a broken impeller? any quick fix ideas?

Re: Bilge pump as impeller?

He doesn't have an impeller problem, the shaft going to the impeller is broken. This is from his other thread.

- impeller looks in good shape. I am able to turn the shaft that drives the impeller with no effort. Does this make sense? Shouldn't it be connected to the drive shaft and require a lot of effort to turn?

I know... I was frustrated when I thought of it. But, if you are in the middle of nowhere with no one around and need to make it back to port, it may be a solution.

Haven t changed my peller yet, will end of season, but this sounds like a good idea to me only in a pinch of course just to keep things cooled down till you can get in.

What sounds like a good idea, a bilge pump for an engine cooling pump ???????

Anyone deal in reality anymore, or is "The Web" the fixer of all your fantasies.

This whole thread is just plain ole ....... never mind I can't say that.

Ajohn79,

1.) They are not made to pump as much water as will be needed as fast as it will be needed.

2.) They are not made to run constantly (think of a house sump pump, they will burn up in short order if they run constantly, sump=bilge).

3.) They cannot change pumping rate to match engine rpm and demand from idle to WOT.

ya, good idea. I'll help you hook it up, but let me grab my crack pipe and lighter first. :p :D

Seroiusley though, even in a pinch, you will likley burn up your engine. I heard a story about a guy that used his bailing bucket to poor water over his engin and idled 10 miles back to his dock. Well, he got about half way before his oil cooked and froze his engine. The story was that he said well, the engine felt cool thouh.

this is fun... I agree with all the comments.... but believe me, if you are in the middle of nowhere you will do whatever is needed to come back. I grew up boating in the ocean, so I know how it feels to be out there getting dark and windy.... you will do whatever is needed as long as you can survive.....

I can dig that man, but usually a person does not have time to post a question on a chat site in that circumstance.....big diff between being stranded fearing for survival and actually planning to do something to GET stranded....;)

I hate to say this (being a former Cobra owner) but I don't think would put myself in a possible "Dark and Windy" ocean situation with a Cobra hanging off the back anyway!

Wait a min....I am still a Cobra owner!......It's still sitting on the floor in a pile....

For your broken pump shaft....you just need to either fix it or replace the drive.

Cheers,

Rick
