bilge pump float switch

At what water level does the float switch on the bilge pump supposed to turn on the pump? Mine requires about 4 inches and that seems high. The dealer guy says they all vary and this particular pump/switch combination requires the water level to cover the pump. This doesn't sound right to me based on what I know about sump pumps. What's the story?

Re: bilge pump float switch

I don't know the brand and type. The boat is a Hurricane GS188 deck boat and the bilge pump is located in a sump located at the rear of the boat just ahead of where the transom is. The float switch has been replaced by the dealer once already since the first one seemed to actuate when there was about 2 inches and then stopped working. The replacement float switch seems to not work until there is 4 inches or more. I'm concerned about the amount of water which would freeze potentially damaging the pump and/or switch.

boatneck- if its not too difficult to get to, you should be able to remove the switch (if its separate from the pump) by simply unscrewing 2 small screws. pull it out (watch the electric lines) and check out how it works. if its the lever type, there is a ball inside that needs to roll to one side to complete the circuit and activate the pump. if the ball rolls fine (you'll hear it inside), then your stuck with what you have. you can look at a variety of pumps and switches at a good marine store, some activate "quicker" than others. i think the pumps that have an internal switch come on a bit quicker. not too expensive either, about $40-60 for a 500gph. good luck-

rule makes a few switches and also autobilge pumps that come on at about 2 1/8" according to the stats and they also make one that has an integrated timer that uses a timer that turns on every 2.5 minutes and runs just an instant and then shuts itself off if there is no water present. would prevent the oily bilge water from fouling the switch. check it out. Good luck

Although all pumps are different, I agree that 4" is way too high. I generally use Rule pumps and they come on at about 1". Look around for a new one and get one with the "self-cleaning" switch feature. Also one gauranteed to run dry without burning up [just in case].
