hi all
I have a phantom 16 that is kept on a trailer out of water and stored with the transom drain plug out of the boat and then that is replaced before launching. On a normal days boating in the sea the boat takes on very little water and isn't an issue. However when the water gets a little choppy (due to a low gunwhale) and people are in and out of the water doing water sports it quickly fills up the bilge. Currently I don't have a bilge pump fitted and due to nearly losing my vessel last week due to water ingress im looking for hints tips and advice on how where and which one to fit?

The thru-hull fitting for the discharge hose appears to be located on the port side, just aft of the boat's lettering. Double-click the photo for a look-see. I wonder if you've thought of calling Phantom Sport Boats to see how they rig their boats?

Is there any sign that there was ever a bilge pump installed? If not, you will need hose, thru-hull fitting, wiring, a switch, and hose clamps in addition to the pump itself. Follow the installation instructions carefully as to proper routing of the hose. This is usually the most difficult part of the installation in a small boat due to the limited space and the flotation foam.

You mentioned that you nearly lost the boat from too much water coming aboard. I'd actually consider having 2 pumps. One small capacity (say, 500 gph) on an automatic switch mounted as low as possible in the boat. That'll take care of rainwater and spray without killing the battery. A second 'big gun' (1500-2000 gph) mounted so that the float switch is a couple inches higher than that of the small pump. It won't go into action at all unless the boat is filling suddenly/quickly, which I assume is what happened to you.

Agreed, and wired to separate batteries if there are 2 of those also.

well it happened over a period of the day. i was taking a big wave over the gunwhale every now and then and after 8 or 9 of these waves the boat became very slugish and heavy towards the rear however if id had a pump fitted i ciould have pumped it through a few times throughout the day and kept on top of the problem

I just pulled that photo from the Phantom Sport Boats website, as I do not own one. A single 1500 GPH bilge pump would be the standard size for your boat. The only reason to go smaller would be if space limitations dictate. Add a float switch to the installation and you'll be good to go.
