Bilge Pump Question

My boat has a battery control switch with the positions Battery #1...both...Battery#2 and Off. I have been told to put the switch in the off position when the boat is docked. I have also been told that the bilge pump will automatically kick on even when the master switch is in the "off" position. I had my boat parked in my driveway while away for 2 days and we had several serious rain showers while I was gone. Could it be that the pump received so much duty that the battery went down and the pump did not finish pumping out the settlement in the bottom of the transom. I had disconnected my cord from my on board trickel charger before leaving to clear the area for the person that cuts my grass and forgot to plug it back in before leaving. I charged both batterys up last night with the trickle charger and filled the lower area with water to see if the bilge pump would kick on. It would only kick on automatically if the swich was in the Battery # 1 position . This tells me that it is not kicking on in the off position. I filled the area up with about 3 inches of water around the bilge pump to see if it would kick on in the off position but It would not unless I moved the position to battery #1. How high up the side of the bilge does the water have to go for it to kick on?

Re: Bilge Pump Question

There should be 3 wires going to your bilge pump. One is a ground, the other 2 are your positives, one to a switch for manual operation and the third should be connected directly to a battery.

And the depth of the water before it kicks on depends on the switch and pump.

Check your wiring for the float switch/bilge pump. I'll bet it is wired in after the Battery 1/2/off switch. Meaning there is the battery, then the 1/2/off switch, then the float switch/pump. If I'm right, you turn off the power to the float switch when you turn the battery switch off,

Move the float switch wire directly to the battery. This is the typical way to wire it.

Why is the plug in the boat while its parked in your driveway? The bow should be up, and drain plug out.
