bilge pump replacement

My bilge pumps works when it wants. And that doesnt seem to be very often. I considered trying to take it apart and see if it could be rebuilt but from looking seems like I could replace it for $20-$40.

So my question is what would be a good pump for my boat. We do a lot of skiing, tubing, and swimming out of it.

19' ski supreme, 351W.

bilge is located directly on front of the engine about mid boat. Access is through about a 6" hole. Standard 12 volt wireing.

The best you can afford ;)

Yes you might remove it and clean it out...... they do clog up with debris and many can be opened and cleaned.

Re: bilge pump replacement

I guess what I was really asking is how many GPH should i get? And from looking here on Iboats I like the Johnson ones just wondered what others used and what they thought of different ones.
Thanks

The BIGGEST you can afford...... rule is do not skimp and get the little ones .....go for at least 1000 gph and if you do not have a float switch get an automatic one.

Don't know what your set up is like, mine had a separate float switch, so the pump wasn't the problem, but the switch was. I bought a non-mechanical switch as a replacement, because the mechanical switch got gunked up. So far I'm very happy with the replacement switch.
I think this is the switch I bought

The best you can buy. 1000 gph min and up. I have a 2000 gph automatic bilge in my boat, to me there's nothing worse than water in my boat I can't stand it. It can't be too good for the interior either. Don't cheap-out on this stuff, it could save a lot of money and headaches in the long run.

Re: bilge pump replacement

From what I can tell the bilge that was in there when I bought it is not automatic even though the switch on the dash shows auto or manual. I did manage to clean it out and it is working great now but does require a manual on-off. Will probably use it for now until I decide what auto bilge to go with. Thanks for the advice guys.

I would go with a Rule Automatic pump. Iboats sells em pretty cheap, and often they have sales on them. thats where i got mine. i think mine is around 600-700 gph.

1000 gph min, with a float switch. Peace of mind. Why would you bother to replace it with anything less? They only cost 40-75 bucks and the switch about 20. I'd think your investment and your family's life should be worth that.
