im replacing a bilge pump that has a float on it .. my question is ... i have three wires to the pump .... hot ground ... and not sure what the other wire is for .... the bilge switch has a rocker type with a light ... any chance that completes the circuit for the light whne the pump turns on???

Re: bilge pump wiring

One should be always hot - that is: directly to the battery so that it is... well... automatic.

One goes to the switch so that you can manually turn it on.
One is ground.

OK -
Hot goes to Hot. Straight to Battery.

Ground goes to Ground. Straight to Battery.

The third wire is a manual override. It is a hot that should run to a switch so that you can turn the bilge on without the float switch engaging, should you ever need to. The other side of the switch should run to the hot side of the Battery.

Make sure you use fuses.

CC

SHO-Boat,

Correction. You never wire straight to the battery hot. Always need a fuse in line.

After further review on the play; I should indeed be clearer . . .

Not just for the hot going to the switch, but also use a proper fuse for the hot going "straight to battery".

Nothing worse than losing a $100 part cause you didn't use a 50cent part!

SHO-Boat,

Sorry, I missed that you did say to use fuses. My apology.
