binnacle control help!

bidding on nice binnacle control on ebay,I am rebuilding pontoon with center console,control is alot newer than motor 1978 johnson 75hp.I have been told newer shift and throttle cables will hook to motor, this doesnt seem right i should have to buy pre 79 cables and have been told will need a harness to hook to motors red plug? totally confused thanks for any help, i might end up with 250.00 control i cant use!

The older and newer cable designs ONLY apply to the control box differences, not the motor. A late model control and cables work fine with an earlier engine.<br /><br />If the control box is a 1996 or later, and has the key switch and wiring included, then you will need an adapter harness to match it to the red connector plug on a pre-1996 engine.

Thank you, this web site has been a great help very professional and fast, i will keep bidding on control. It does say for 82 or newer johnson, so when i get it i will order 79 or later cables and will order adapter although i dont see one end looking like a big red plug on my johnson 1978?but it coulb be just picture part # is right.
